What makes a great photo?

 Its the photo’s ability to talk to you, to evoke an emotion within you.

“This young girl from Johannesburg was looking through the fence at Khaya Centre Mount Olive a moment before I captured this shot. You could tell she wanted to go inside and experience the love, joy and laughter that was coming through the fence and spilling into the neighbourhood, but for some reason she did not enter. Quickly the longing in her face was replaced with the hardened stare you see here. The moment touched me”.

One of the most powerful, yet often the most difficult components to master in photography is capturing emotion and feeling.  A great image is one that conveys a mood and pulls the viewer into the scene. If a photo tells a story,  pulls at your heartstrings or begs a question, the image has fulfilled its purpose.

Emotion in a photograph is what helps the viewer connect with a scene. The beauty of a photo is that the same image can evoke different emotions for different people, happiness, joy, sorrow, despair or hope.

What most photographers would like to achieve is to have you experience the emotion they experienced while capturing that moment:  the real reason the photo was taken in the first place.
